First Grade Mathematics Curriculum Modules
Summarized from A Story Of Units
Module 1: Sums and Differences to 10The students work to build fluency with addition and subtractions facts to 10 within the context of Grade 1 type problems. Fluency with addition and subtraction facts is reinforced.
Module 2: Introduction to Place Value Through Addition and Subtraction Within 20Students begin adding and subtracting across ten in word problems and equations. Students learn to group 10 ones as a single unit, which helps to understand place value. Modeling is done throughout the unit.
Module 3: Ordering and Comparing Length Measurements as NumbersStudents measure and compare lengths indirectly. They will express the length of an object as a whole number of units. Daily fluency activities will help students to further understand and reinforce the concept of “making a 10.”
Module 4: Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 40Place value is the focus in this unit. Students will add and subtract within 40 and continue to work on recognizing “ten” as a unit that can be counted.
Module 5: Identifying, Composing, and Partitioning ShapesStudents will think about attributes of shapes and practice composing and decomposing geometric shapes. In this unit students will also tell and write time in hours and half hours on analog and digital clocks. Daily fluency activities will reinforce addition and subtraction within 40.
Module 6: Place Value, Comparison, Addition and Subtraction to 100Students will build on their knowledge of adding and subtracting within 40 and use mental math strategies. Using drawings and linking cubes students will explore adding and subtracting within 100 by making units of 10. Students will also count to 120 and represent any number with a numeral. Students will also recognize and identify coins, their names and their values.
