Dixson first grades blast into second grade

There were giggles, mortar board adjustments and lots of balloons all in anticipation of a new adventure during the Carl L. Dixson First Grade Moving Up ceremony.

Students were ready to “blast off” into second grade, as per the matching t-shirts they were wearing and teachers and staff, along with family and friends were ready to support them on their adventure.

Gathering in the Grady gym, rising second graders were reminded how much they had learned and what a great foundation they have for when they return to school in the fall.

“Today is a very special day as we come together to celebrate our incredible first graders and all they have accomplished this school year,” said Principal Debbie Earle. 

“I want you to know how proud I am of each and every one of you. This year you have grown in so many ways. You’ve become stronger readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists and problem solvers,” Ms. Earle continued.

She noted too how the students had developed new skills and showed kindness to one another along with perseverance and determination.

The principal explained how she too was learning right along with the students, as it was her first year as principal of their school.

“One of my greatest joys was standing outside each morning and seeing your smiling faces arrive at school,” she said. “You all brightened my day.”

Ms. Earle thanked her “amazing staff” along with the families she worked with.

“Always be kind,” she told students, and said they should never stop asking questions and to not be afraid to make mistakes.”

“I cannot wait to hear about your adventures in second grade and how much more you will grow in the years to come,” Ms. Earle said.

Deputy Superintendent and Grady Interim Principal said in his role as deputy superintendent he visits many classrooms and told students they should be proud of themselves and the learning they had done throughout the school.

“You learned how to be great students,” he said.

On a personal note, he reminded parents that they should treasure this time with their children, as he knows how quickly time passes, as his daughter just graduated from high school.

“It feels like just yesterday she was sitting exactly where your children are sitting,” he said. “My advice to parents and students sitting here today is to enjoy the ride.”

“The years ahead will be filled with so much discovery, new friendships and incredible learning, don’t rush through it,” he said.

The excitement is building, Mr. Yap said to welcome these young students to Grady in the fall.

“Keep shining, keep learning,” he told them.
