New Grady Student Council is sworn in during special ceremony
The group of students sat in rows of seats in the Village Hall patiently waiting, having just received a police escort from their school to the Village court. There was a murmur of voices and some nervous shifting in their seats.
When it was announced, “all rise,” they stood up, along with the family, friend and officials in the room.
The Honorable Rosalie Tanis, Elmsford’s Village Judge, took her seat on the bench and everyone took their seats too.
At first glance the proceedings may have appeared solemn, but within minutes a celebratory atmosphere prevailed. Judge Tanis smiled and greeted the students and everyone felt more relaxed.
The group had gathered to swear in the new Grady Elementary School Student Council. One by one, the students stood up, raised their right hand, and repeated what the judge said, promising to faithfully execute the office they hold at their school and “will to the best of my ability lead with enthusiasm, diligence and respect for all.”
“This ceremony is a significant occasion for young leaders from the Alice E. Grady Elementary School,” the judge said. “Leadership is not only about guiding others but also about listening and collaborating to create positive change.”
Taking the oath on this day were Frank S., President, Samuel A., Vice President, Gabriel V., Treasurer, Matthew B. and Linnea B., Co-Secretaries and Michael P., Class Representative.
“I am excited to see what each of you will contribute in the upcoming year,” Judge Tanis said. “You have the power and influence to inspire your community.”
“I want to lead and make sure the school is good when I leave,” Samuel said as to why he ran for office.
“I wanted to make the most of my last year,” Frank said.
