Crisis Resources for Parents
The Pupil Personnel Staff has compiled guidelines to assist parents in helping our students cope through uncertain times. High profile acts of violence can confuse and frighten children. They may look to parents for information and guidance on how to react. Parents can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security in talking with them about their fears.
On this page is a collection of resources we have assembled to assist parents in times of traumatic events. This information is to help you recognize fears or concerns your children may be having. After reviewing this information, if you are concerned about your child, please feel free to contact your School Psychologist, School Social Worker, or Guidance Counselor.
- Limit exposure to television and the news
- Try to keep routines as normal as possible
- Be honest with kids and share information that is appropriate for their age
- Listen to kids fears and concerns
- Reassure that the world is a good place to be - but there are people who do bad things
- Parents need to first deal with and assess their own responses to crisis and stress
